THE BASICS OF PRAYER #1
BLOG #69 The Lord’s Prayer 8/21/2020
The Lord’s disciples knew of the Lord’s love for prayer.
On a given day, one of His disciples asked Him: “…Lord, teach us to pray…”
(Luke 11:1, NIV). To know how to pray and what to pray for we need a teacher. The
only one who can teach us is Jesus.
He told His disciples: “When you pray, say: “Father,
hallowed be your name...’’ (Luke 11:2, NIV.)
“Father,” in the Aramaic language, is “Abba (Mark
14:36).” It emphasizes the warm and intimate relationship between the believer
and God” (Baker Commentary). Hallowed is to make holy. Your name is to be deeply
respected.
“Your kingdom come” refers to the Second Coming of
Christ. It also refers to His will that it be done on earth as in heaven (Luke
11:2, NIV),
“Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who
sins against us” (Luke 11:4, NIV). Even if we forgive others, it does not mean
we deserve to be forgiven. Lead “us not into temptation” (Luke 11:4, NIV). says
the word “temptation” more probably refers to “a situation which one is exposed
to the seduction of sin” (The Interpreter’s Bible).
